Perfectly Brown

About the Author

Dr. Jobyna Terry is a native of Halifax, Virginia, where she grew up on a farm. She discovered she had a knack for writing at a young age. As an elementary student, she wrote short stories for an in-class competition, which was started by her teacher Mrs. Royster. In her teenage years, she wrote songs and poetry. After completing high school, she went on to attend Norfolk State University, as a Business Management major, in Norfolk, Virginia. At Norfolk State University, she worked with Norfolk Public School as a mentor to young girls and conducted a campus-wide clothing drive for Battered Women and Children's shelter.

She then went on to pursue her dream to become an attorney and attended the Charlotte School of Law. During law school, Dr. Terry's writing style changed a bit to become more concise, but it did not change the passion she had for writing. She always had a passion for story telling which is why it came easy in certain classes. After graduating law school, she decided to tackle another conquest that was needed in the African-American household. Dr. Terry decided to write Perfectly Brown after taking her Goddaughter, Tynizha, to the library and noticing there were no brown children in the books. She started on her quest to encourage black children to read about themselves, but show them that black families exist. Her next project called "Just Justice" will reflect blended families.
